Snoring Can Be Caused By a Number of Factors
Snoring occurs during the different stages of sleep when the soft palate, tongue, and throat relaxes, which causes vibrations of the soft tissues in the airway. When these soft tissues relax, it causes a narrower airway, thus producing a turbulent airflow and thus a snore is produced. People snore more on their back because a weak tongue falls back in the throat when relaxed. A strong tongue will stay where it is supposed to, on the roof of the mouth and against the palate.
When a person snores, it is generally because they are mouth breathing. Through myofunctional therapy the muscles of the face, tongue and throat can be strengthened to prevent these tissues from relaxing during sleep. Simultaneously in therapy, any breathing pattern disorders will be retrained like mouth breathing.
Snoring can be a sign that you have more serious health issues like sleep apnea, but it does not always mean sleep apnea is present.
How can orofacial myofunctional therapy help?
Myofunctional therapy will help to strengthen the muscles of the soft palate, teach the tongue to rest in the proper resting position in the roof of the mouth. Myofunctional therapy would strengthen the the muscles of the face, tongue, soft palate and throat can be strengthened to prevent these tissues from relaxing during sleep. With the tongue being taught to rest in the proper resting position and any breathing pattern disorders like mouth breathing being retrained, snoring should in a sense be reduced, as long as there are no other serious health issues like sleep apnea present.
