How does myofunctional therapy work?
How does myofunctional therapy work?
An Individualized Treatment Plan
Therapy is personalized and tailored to your needs. It is carefully structured with each session progressively building on the one before it. Treatment starts with improving oral and facial muscle strength, and then retraining proper muscle function (i.e. swallowing, eating, speech, tongue-tie, sleep apnea exercises, depending on your symptoms).
While coaching the client through these individualized specialty exercises for the mouth and facial muscles and working with behavioral modifications, we can help the brain to develop new neural pathways to the oral facial muscles. Through repetition and time, we can
re-pattern them to improve tone, mobility, and overall function.
Myofunctional Therapy Includes:
• Meeting weekly or every other week for exercises via a virtual meeting or in person sessions
• Coaching with kindness and compassion
• Individualized specialized exercises to practice about 5 minutes 2x/day in between sessions
• Working toward meeting the four goals: Tongue, lips, and jaw resting in the proper posture, nasal breathing, lips sealed, correct swallow
Therapy Sessions
Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy involves meeting with a therapist for an initial comprehensive evaluation followed by a series of therapy sessions. These therapy sessions will be customized to address your individual orofacial and breathing issues.
Children's sessions can range anywhere from 3-12 sessions. Adult sessions can range anywhere from 12-20 sessions.
Each session is approximately 30-45 minutes in length and are spaced anywhere from 1-3 weeks apart. Each session introduces new behavior modifications and a series of exercises based on the individual to practice at home.
Your daily commitment is only about 5-10 minutes, 2x/day. It is crucial you are committed to practicing daily to get the full benefits of the program. Each session can take place either in person or via online video conferencing.
